Italian craftsmanship meets horological design
A Brief History of Italian Watchmaking
Italy did not set out to invent watch technology or manufacture movements at scale. Its gift to horology is design, style, military heritage and a passionate watch culture.
Early History
For centuries Italy imported most of its watches and movements from Switzerland, France and Germany. Italian craftsmen were renowned instead for jewellery, goldsmithing, design and luxury goods โ so Italy became a market that prized beautiful design and craftsmanship.
The Birth of Panerai
The most important name in Italian watch history was founded in Florence in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai โ at first a watch shop, a watchmaking school and an instrument supplier. Panerai later became a supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy.
Military Heritage
Panerai developed watches for the Navy's elite divers โ the Radiomir and the Luminor โ famous for large cases, exceptional legibility and military durability. Early pieces used Swiss movements while Panerai focused on design and military specification.
The Italian Design Influence
Italy's greatest contribution is arguably its design philosophy. Italian enthusiasts and designers popularised large watches, tool watches, military aesthetics and fashion-conscious luxury โ a taste that has shaped the global market for decades.
Modern Italian Watchmaking
Italy makes far fewer watches than Switzerland, Germany or Japan, but several respected brands carry the tradition: Panerai, Anonimo (founded by former Panerai personnel), Unimatic with its minimalist modern designs, and U-Boat with its large military-inspired cases.
