A Brief History of French Watchmaking

Before Switzerland became dominant, France was one of Europe's leading centres for clockmaking, scientific instruments and luxury watchmaking.

1500s โ€“ 1700s

Early Origins

During the Renaissance and the reigns of the French kings, Paris became a centre of luxury craftsmanship. French watchmakers served royal courts, nobility, scientists and explorers, and excelled at decorative watchmaking, precision clocks and scientific timekeeping instruments.

1747

The Greatest French Watchmaker

Abraham-Louis Breguet — Born in 1747 and widely regarded as one of the greatest watchmakers in history. He invented the tourbillon (patented in 1801), improved the perpetual calendar, advanced shock protection and made watches for the royalty of Napoleon's Europe.

Many modern watchmakers still use his inventions. If Britain's hero is John Harrison and America's is Aaron Dennison, France's hero is Abraham-Louis Breguet.

1800s

France and Luxury Watchmaking

Paris became one of the world's luxury capitals, and French watchmakers excelled in artistic design, jewellery watches, decorative craftsmanship and a high-end clientele โ€” while Switzerland gradually became the centre of large-scale production thanks to its manufacturing network and specialised workforce.

1904

Cartier and the Wristwatch Revolution

Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847. In 1904 it created the Santos for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont โ€” often cited as one of the first modern men's wristwatches, at a time when pocket watches still dominated.

The 20th Century

As Switzerland became the dominant watchmaking nation, France stayed influential through luxury houses such as Cartier, Breguet, Van Cleef & Arpels and Hermรจs โ€” brands focused on design, jewellery and prestige, often relying on Swiss manufacturing expertise.

Today

Modern French Watchmaking

France's watch industry is smaller than those of Switzerland, Germany or Japan, but its heritage remains important. Notable names include Breguet, Cartier, Yema โ€” the historic sports-watch maker founded in 1948 โ€” and the aviation-inspired Bell & Ross.
